The Wonder of a Child

Was there anyone else out there that was super excited to see the new Mary Poppins movie?

Well, if you were like me, you were counting down the days to get to go see this movie. It was supposed to be a “mommy outing”—just some time for me to go out and get some alone time. But…I thought it would be fun to take my oldest son, Judah. There was a fun part in the movie when Mary Poppins was preparing the children for bath time and as the children entered the tub, they “went down the drain” and ended up in a cartoon illustrated ocean with lots of colorful fish and coral. I turned to look at my son to catch his reaction and he was WIDE-EYED with his mouth hanging open in total AWE.

At that very moment I began to hear the song “Wonder” by Bethel Music playing in my head…

May we never lose our wonder
May we never lose our wonder
Wide eyed and mystified
May we be just like a child
Staring at the beauty of our King

Wonder: a feeling of amazement and admiration, caused by something beautiful or remarkable.  What could be more beautiful than our heavenly Father? Yet as we go through life, we often lose our wonder for Him and His beauty. Children are referenced many times in scriptures as ones that we can learn from and should aspire to be like to inherit the things of the kingdom. If you have small children like I do, do you ever pay attention to the amazement that they have at just about, well, EVERYTHING?! Just a simple drive to Chick Fil A could sound like this…

“WOAH! Did you see that firetruck?
“Awww, look at the bird; he’s so cute…”  (Meanwhile I’m thinking, “What bird?”)
“Hey Mom! What’s his name?” As we pull up next to a car at a stop light.
“The sun is shining bright today!”

Their little eyes are fixed on what’s around them—their environment. Think about it; when is the last time you stepped outside and fixed your eyes on what was around you? The masterpiece of His creation? I challenge you, myself included, to get up early sometime and watch the sunrise, close your eyes and listen to the bird’s chirp, get to an ocean and watch the waves go in and out. I promise that if you focus long enough your wonder will be reignited. The heavens declare the glory of God (Ps 19:1).

Children also have an ability to focus in on the little details of things, which also contributes to their sense of wonder. I get it. When your feet hit the ground in the morning it is easy to step into your normal routine of the job—taking care of the children, cleaning the house, etc.—that we don’t always notice the little things. We have our agenda and our to-do-list and our focus is set. But have we become so robotic in our daily routines that we’ve lost sight of the little details of our day that show us how His love, provision, protection, forgiveness, grace, mercy, joy, and so much of His goodness is woven so beautifully into our everyday lives? When we take time to sit back and think of how much Father is a part of our everyday life, wonder will be reignited.

King David said in Psalm 27 verse 4, “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.” Seems like David wrote the song Wonder before Bethel (LOL).

Here we see that David understood a key to life—remaining in awe of God and never losing wonder of Him. This is crucial because wonder leads to worship, which is the essence of our being.

If your children are still small or you happen to be around a small child, watch and learn. Be inspired to live in a state of wonder of our King. See Him in creation, see Him in the details of your life and fix your eyes on His beauty.

Take a moment, go some place quiet, close your eyes, listen to this song and enter into the wonder of a child; stand in awe your heavenly Father. And if you feel like you’ve allowed life to make your view of Him dull and lifeless, as this song plays simply repent and ask Him to give you fresh eyes to see Him. I promise He will do it for you.

Hello everyone!

My name is Nikevia Lebron and I am a wife, mother, and minister. Thinking back to early childhood I used to tell my mom that I couldn’t wait to grow up and be a grandmother. She’d laugh and say, “You have to be a mother first,” but in my mind my grandmother was the best! She had lots of grandchildren and that’s what I wanted—to have lots of children around me and to love on them, just like my grandmother. As I grew older and began to think about my life and career journey, all I ever could pinpoint as a desire of my heart was to do ministry and be a wife and mother. So here I am on this journey of parenthood just like the rest of you. I pray that you are blessed by what Holy Spirit shares and reveals to me in my daily walk of life as a parent.

Love and goldfish crackers,

Nikevia
